Who Is LaToya Cantrell?

LaToya Cantrell is an American politician and the current Mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Born on April 3, 1972, in Los Angeles, California, Cantrell has served as mayor since May 7, 2018, and is the first woman to hold the office.

Cantrell studied sociology at Xavier University of Louisiana, where she received her first degree. She went to the Harvard Kennedy School as well.

Cantrell served on the New Orleans City Council from 2012 to 2018 as the democratic party’s representative for District B.

Cantrell is a member of the Criminal Justice Committee, and is remembered for her work on the understaffing at the New Orleans Police Department, installing crime cameras in her district, and evaluating the success of citywide anti-gun violence efforts.

Cantrell was sworn in as mayor in 2018 and was re-elected to the position in 2021.

She advocated at the time for better public health results, innovative technologies, and higher-paying jobs for city employees.

For her contributions to the community, Cantrell holds a lifetime achievement award given to her by the presidents of Tulane, Loyola and Xavier universities and the University of New Orleans.
